If you’re anything like me, getting in front of the camera feels DAUNTING. Now, I know what you’re thinking… Chey, how could you feel nervous in front of the camera when you spend so much time coaching others behind it? Well, like many others, I didn’t always love having my photo taken. Over the years, I’ve challenged myself to get comfortable stepping out of my comfort zone (and dragging my handsome hubby into the frame with me), and I’m here to help you do the same!
Change your perspective
I used to think of photoshoots as this big elaborate thing where I had to be smiling and perfect the entire time. Over time, my methods as a photographer changed from lots of posing to a little posing and lots of prompting, resulting in the beautiful candid moments you see in my portfolio today. Today, I think of couples sessions and engagement photoshoots as date nights where you get to belly laugh with your best friend, watch the sunset, and dance your heart out.
Be yourself
When my husband and I got our engagement photos done, the thing that was the most important to him was that we look like ourselves. He said he didn’t understand why people dressed like someone else or wore ten tons of makeup when that wasn’t what they felt comfortable in. Though I share his opinion somewhat, I think there’s always two sides to every coin. I am a tomboy through and through, but I still love curling my hair and wearing a little blush with my favorite flowy dress and cowboy boots. Don’t be afraid to get fancy, just remember that the more comfortable you are, the easier it will be for you to have fun and feel like yourself. If choosing the right outfit isn’t your jam, I’ve created a free wardrobe guide to help you out!
Hire a photographer that feels like the best friend you didn’t know you needed
Consultations can feel time consuming, redundant and silly, but they are so necessary to finding a photographer that will be the right fit for you. If you and your photographer don’t vibe, the likelihood of your photos turning out as dreamy as you’d hoped decreases. Building a comfortable and meaningful relationship with your photographer helps ease nerves, bring out the true personality of your relationship, and makes it easier for your photographer to capture those blissful moments. Get to know your photographer, it’ll make enjoying your couples session or engagement session ten times easier.
Thanks again for joining me on The Wild Side!
Wildly with love,
Chey
